Hedgie - "Old Man"

Picture
Sex:  Male
Age:  4 years
Experience needed:  Hedgie exp required

Hedgie, who we affectionately refer to as “Old Man”, is a senior male hedgehog who just turned 4 years old. With the average hedgehog life expectancy being 4–5 years, he’s considered a hospice placement. He could only be homed to someone who is experienced with hedgehogs, financially capable of providing vet care for any issues that may pop up in his golden years, and emotionally prepared for possibly having a short time together.
Once he’s fully awake and warmed up, Old Man is a very sweet boy. The only catch is that he’s never happy about waking up. When we first pick him up, he is usually balled up for a minute or two. Then he slowly relaxes his quills, pokes his head out, and starts exploring. He’s generally a very friendly, cuddly guy once he’s up and moving. You just have to be able to power through that first minute or two of grumpy old man energy.
He has no known health issues. He eats well, has surprisingly good teeth for his age, and is a healthy weight. He’s quite active in his cage and play area and he loves running on his wheel at night. While we don’t see any immediate signs that he’s slowing down, we know older hedgehogs can be unpredictable - some can rarely live to 6 or 7, while others pass around 4.
We are fully aware that the kind of unicorn adopter he requires is hard to come by, so we’re prepared to care for Old Man here for the rest of his life, as we often end up doing with senior rescues. That said, if the right owner is out there – someone with a soft spot for the underdog, confidence handling hedgehogs in their spiky wake-up period, and the resources to provide for him if his health declines – then we’d be absolutely thrilled for him! It’s always a blessing when an older hedgie gets to spend the rest of their life with a loving owner who can provide them the kind of constant one-on-one daily attention that is difficult for us to match considering the amount of hedgies we have to care for every day.

Because of his age and the possibility of future vet needs, his adoption fee would be completely waived for the right home.

If you think you may be the right match for our little old man Hedgie, shoot us a Facebook message here or text us at 856-630-7563
